Lalibela Circus and Cultural Show
hands that work together
Music
The Lalibela Circus and Cultural Show Pilot Project Band was led by Melkamu Fentaw. He plays Kra, a traditional hand-held harp. He was also the lead male singer, assistant director of the play and an actor.
Also in the band were traditional Ethiopian drums, Mesenqo (a one stringed instrument that is bowed) and a Washint (traditional flute). The Mesenqo player traditionally improvises lyrics about the audience while playing for crowds. Our Mesenqo sang during a wedding party scene in the play about early marriage. The Washint also played solo while the circus created church pyramids and for monologues during the play .
